Laughing At Life Through A Different Lens
So I keep forgetting my glasses. Yes, I know there is probably an app that could remind me, and of course, there are the beaded eyeglass chains that I've only seen one older woman from Queens pull off with any style. But I'm not ready to go there. Not yet anyway.
I actually think my issue is sheer denial of the fact that I'm getting older and that the days of being able to forget my glasses and still see, particularly up close, have long passed. (It's now a running joke in our house when I ask our girls to help me read the dosage directions on just about every medicine container we own.)
That being said, I also must admit that life is often far more interesting when things are not clearly visible. Take a conversation with my husband, for example. When the trailers first began coming out about The Greatest Showman, I apparently was without my glasses, so I misread the title of this particular film from the start, changing Showman to Snowman in my head. I never thought twice about it until my husband said he wanted to see the film. I responded with: "I really don't think we should waste a dime on a movie about a snowman."
Perplexed and questioning my sanity, he quickly asked me "what on earth I was talking about" to which I argued again that seeing a snowman on the big screen, regardless of its greatness, is not my idea of a good date night nor any night for that matter.
Convinced I was crazy, he then decided, I later learned, to take this further.
"Well, I like snowmen. They never judge, always seem happy, and make the most of every day as they know their time is limited," he said.
"Are you serious?!!" I snapped back. Since we hardly ever go out, the thought of wasting a rare date night on snowmen seemed absurd.
"There is a not a margarita big enough to make me want to see a movie about a great snowman," I replied.
"Then let's switch and see The Greatest SHOWMan," he said.
"Showman? What's that about?"
"Snowmen at a circus."
Just then and somewhat mortified, I realized my error. I could have felt badly or even stupid in the moment, but it quickly occurred to me that had I not forgotten my glasses, this exchange would never have happened, nor would the laughter that ensued.
Yes, life has a way of making paths unclear, but how we focus in the moment is the key.
(And The Greatest Showman is an awesome movie by the way.)
